Why Design Conversations Matter More Than Design Documents

System design is fundamentally a requirements discovery process, not a solution generation process. The diagram is just a side effect. AI tools are remarkably well-suited for this discovery phase because they can ask clarifying questions, surface assumptions, and model consequences of design choices without the social friction that sometimes prevents team members from challenging a senior engineer's first instinct.

The key insight is to treat AI as a Socratic partner rather than an answer machine. When you say "design me a notification system," you are asking for an answer. When you say "help me understand what I don't yet know about building a notification system," you are starting a conversation. That distinction separates engineers who use AI to go faster from engineers who use AI to go better.

Prompting AI to Steelman Different Approaches

A backend engineer with strong relational database experience will reach for PostgreSQL even when a document store might be a better fit. An engineer who just read about event sourcing will see every problem as a message queue problem. AI can counterbalance these biases by presenting alternatives with genuine analytical depth.

When you ask AI to steelman an approach, you should be specific about the constraints: team size, operational expertise, existing infrastructure, and timeline. An argument for Kafka makes more sense for a team of twenty with a dedicated platform engineering group than for a team of three who are also running the product.

Surfacing Unstated Requirements and Edge Cases

Requirements documents are always incomplete. Business stakeholders describe the happy path. Engineers hear the happy path. The painful edge cases live in the gap between what was said and what was meant.

AI excels at pattern-matching across thousands of similar systems to surface requirements that are commonly forgotten. Given a high-level description of your system, an AI can ask: What is the data retention policy? Who owns the data in multi-tenant scenarios? What happens when a user account is deleted? What is the disaster recovery RTO? Are there regulatory requirements (GDPR, HIPAA, SOC2) that affect data storage?

These are not exotic questions. They are the questions that come up in post-mortems after a painful production incident. Getting them into the design conversation early costs an afternoon of thinking. Discovering them after six months of development costs weeks of refactoring.

The technique is simple: after you have described a system to an AI, explicitly ask it to enumerate all the requirements you have not mentioned. Then, for each one, decide whether it is in scope, out of scope, or unknown. Document that decision. That document is already more valuable than most requirements specifications.

You bet that consistency matters more than availability in your domain, or the reverse. Making those bets explicit is the difference between an architecture that ages well and one that becomes a source of ongoing pain.

The classic trade-offs in distributed systems — consistency vs. availability (CAP theorem), latency vs. throughput, cost vs. performance, operational complexity vs. flexibility — are well-understood in theory but hard to reason about in the specific context of your system. AI can make these trade-offs concrete by walking through scenarios: "If you choose eventual consistency here, what does that mean when two users update the same record simultaneously?" or "If you cache aggressively at this layer, what is the staleness window, and does your business logic tolerate that?"

Trade-off exploration should happen before any significant design commitment, not after. It is psychologically much easier to change a design when it exists only in a document than when it exists in a running service with six teams depending on it.

Learning tip: Keep a design conversation in a single long thread or document. The AI's ability to give useful responses improves dramatically when it has context from earlier in the conversation.

Avoiding AI Anchoring on a Bad First Design

AI models are trained to be helpful, which means they tend to build on whatever framing you give them rather than challenge it. If you say "I'm building a microservices notification system" and your real problem is better served by a monolith with a background job queue, the AI will probably generate a good microservices design rather than asking whether microservices is the right choice.

This is the anchoring problem: the first design framing, even if wrong, shapes all subsequent suggestions. To fight anchoring, you need to be deliberate about separating problem description from solution description. Tell the AI what you are trying to achieve and what constraints you are operating under. Do not tell it what architecture you want until after you have explored options.

You can also directly prompt the AI to challenge your assumptions: ask it to imagine you are wrong about the architectural choice and describe what a better approach might look like. Ask it to give you the argument for the "boring" alternative — the simpler, older, more proven technology. The answer is often surprising.

Learning tip: Add this sentence to your first design prompt: "Please challenge any architectural assumptions I've made. If a simpler approach could meet these requirements, I want to know about it." This single instruction will save you from anchoring more than anything else.

After requirements are clearer, ask:

Based on the requirements we've established, give me two or three architectural approaches for this feature. For each approach:
1. Describe the design in 3-4 sentences
2. List 3 advantages
3. List 3 risks or trade-offs
4. Describe the ideal team/context where this approach makes sense

Do not recommend one approach yet. I want to evaluate them myself first.

Step 5: Apply your real constraints

After reading the options, tell the AI your real constraints (team size, time, existing stack, operational maturity) and ask it to filter the options.

Step 6: Ask for steelmanning of your preferred option

I'm leaning toward [option X]. Please steelman the case against this choice — give me the strongest possible argument for why this is the wrong approach for our situation. Then give me the strongest counter-argument for why it is the right choice.

Step 7: Document the unstated requirements

Ask the AI to list every requirement that surfaced during the conversation that was not in your original problem statement. This list becomes your design assumptions document.
